The busiest times are just before shows and during intervals, where you'll be assisting our audiences and ensuring they have a fantastic time. Once things quiet down, you'll help with restocking, tidying up, and exploring new ways to boost sales. There’s also plenty of training and learning opportunities along the way. It’s a dynamic role, full of variety, and you'll always be facing fresh, exciting challenges.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • The post-holder will provide excellent and friendly customer service in a busy theatre setting, ensuring that our customers have an enjoyable and positive experience. They will be able to work efficiently and accurately under pressure, in a fast paced environment whilst providing a warm and welcoming service.

  • As part of their duties, Theatre Stewards are required to work in all Front of House areas, including bars, restaurants (where applicable), merchandise, ice cream sales, functions, hospitality, ticket checks, basic box office skills, general stewarding and any other duties required in the position.

Primary Objectives for the position will be:

  • To maintain a comfortable and welcoming environment for all customers attending the venue

  • To provide an excellent level of customer service to all users of the Beck Theatre

  • To assist with the smooth running of performances and functions at the venue

  • To maintain a safe and clean environment for all visitors

  • To proactively sell and prepare products as required

SHIFTS - A Theatre Steward may undertake the following tasks:

  • Serving drinks from the bars, restaurants & retail kiosks

  • Selling programmes, merchandise and ice creams and reconciling income to the required standard whilst ensuring the security of your stock and money at all times

  • Assisting in the Box Office with ticket collections and ticket printing pre show as & when required.

  • Serving meals, snacks & restaurant service.

  • Preparing and cooking our range of pizzas whilst ensuring all Food Health & Hygiene regulations are maintained (where applicable).

  • Finance handling either manually or using our EPOS till system to take card payments (cash handling where applicable).

  • To proactively upsell products and ensure that you are fully aware of all the facilities and products available in the theatre, along with a good knowledge of the relevant performance and venue information.

  • To re-stock sales points during each performance as directed by management.

  • To ensure all Licencing policies are adhered to at all times.

  • Maintaining the general safety and comfort of customers.

  • General stewarding for conferences and festival events.

  • Performance Usher as required including welcoming visitors to the venues, checking tickets, seating guests and monitoring the audience during the shows.

  • Assisting with Emergency Evacuations and any other emergency situations that may arise.

  • Litter picking and cleaning duties between performances.

  • Maintaining the cleanliness & tidiness of all areas as standard, including deep-cleans as and when required.

  • To ensure that all duties are carried out in compliance with statutory provisions and in accordance with the Company’s Health & Safety Policy.

  • To ensure that all duties are carried out in compliance with the Company’s Equality & Diversity Policy.

  • To undertake any other duties that may be required by the Duty Manager or Supervisor.

THE CANDIDATE

Experience:

  • Retail & Customer service experience.

  • Previous bar experience would be a strong advantage.

  • Food preparation experience (where applicable).

Personal:

  • A positive attitude towards customer service issues.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly & cohesively with the public at all levels.

  • A considerate, friendly, warm & approachable temperament.

  • Ability to work as part of a team, as well as on own initiative.

Theatre Steward Shift Information:

  • Shift times vary depending on the specific event, show, and theatre location.
  • Most shifts for evening performances begin between 5:30 PM and 7:00 PM, which is typically 45 minutes to two hours before the show starts. When we have afternoon, or matinée, performances, the shifts generally start between 12:30 PM and 2:00 PM.
  • Shifts typically last between 3.5 and 4.5 hours. Evening shifts usually conclude between 9:30 PM and 11:00 PM.
  • We are generally able to consider travel needs, such as leaving early to catch a last train. Please inquire about this if you are thinking of applying.
  • Please note that schedules can sometimes change based on the individual theatre. We also frequently host shows with slightly different timings. For instance, we often have more matinée performances during school holidays and for pantomimes. Additionally, there may be periods throughout the year when the theatre is ‘dark’ and no shows are scheduled.
  • Our theatres are also available for hire for various events outside of our regular show schedule, including weddings, conferences, filming, and community events.
